The Talent Shortage

The marketing terms fly at us quickly and consistently: Flex-Economy, Gig-Economy, On-Demand Economy. How do you keep up? Which is it? In truth, it doesn’t matter. They are all describing or selling solutions to the same problem. A shortage of talent.

In our project based practice lines here at STG, we offer flexibility. Many clients do not need talent full time or on-site, or even in the same part of the world that they need the help! We can provide global talent to solve regional and local solutions. In most instances, this allows us to save the client time and money.

However, many clients are feeling the pressure and have a firsthand understanding of the talent shortage when trying to hire full-time employees. There are many factors that are driving this shortage:

  • Retiring baby-boomers
  • Millennials that only want contract work
  • Legacy technology on client sites
  • Corporate initiatives to drive employee costs down as much as possible

Any one of these factors limits the talent supply and no single factor drives the shortage up faster than the other. In many cases the technology changes so quickly that professionals must move on from what they know now just to keep up and keep themselves in demand for future employment. They do this by job hopping and following the latest technologies and keeping their skills relevant.

Spencer Thomas Group has been assisting clients with Project Management, Program Management, and Subject Matter Expertise for nearly 20 years. During that time, we have built our global capabilities in business process and systems along with a diverse group of talented employees, consultants and partners. We have worked in over 80 countries on 6 continents providing talent from Project Managers to Network Administrators and Help Desk Support.

Our Approach to the Flex or Gig Economy

We utilize our RightFIT recruiting and background check-lists to build relationships across the globe with a network of talented employees, consultants and partners. Upon successful completion of a Spencer Thomas Group project, the consultant is classified as STGSourced. STGSourced professionals are the people we provide to our clients when they require an “On-Demand Resource” for the on-demand economy. Through this process, we ensure our clients are working with known professionals that have the background and experience to hit the ground running and get the job done right, on-time and within budget.

We have seen many terms over the years and our approach has always been the same, provide verified professionals in a timely manner and put our clients needs above all else. It is a great team to be a part of and I look forward to the next description of the economy that comes our way. The talent shortage is real, but Spencer Thomas Group can help.
