If you work in the HCM space, you may be familiar with National Payroll Week (NPW), which is September 3rd-7th.  If you are not familiar, here are a few facts.

  • NPW was started by the American Payroll Association (APA) in 1996 and occurs every year the same week as Labor Day.
  • NPW is a great week to get involved, celebrate your payroll team, educate yourself and your organization, and have some fun.
  • The APA even has a website to give you all kinds of ideas on what to do… nationalpayrollweek.com.

Many employees walk into their place of work every day without ever thinking about payroll, how they get paid or the steps it takes to make sure everyone gets paid correctly.  Payroll administrators rarely receive the gratitude they deserve for making sure everyone gets their paycheck on-time.  NPW is the perfect time to pause and thank your payroll team for being the superheroes of the office.

The APA and their local chapters are obviously very engaged in activities for the week.  If you are a member of your local APA, this is a great opportunity to get involved.  If not a member, well it’s a great time to join!  I bet most of you reading this didn’t know there is an official NPW slogan, an official song, and an annual “Getting Paid in America” annual survey. Seriously, check it out!

Many of the large Payroll providers like ADP and Ultimate Software are sponsors of NPW and are helping to evangelize the messaging.  For all other companies, this an opportunity to support NPW and celebrate your company’s payroll professionals.  We all know the old saying, “No one calls payroll to say their paycheck was right.”

Well, now is the time to say “Thank You” to your payroll team for all of the things they do throughout the year.  Although HCM systems continue to evolve and AI is at the forefront of payroll vendor talk tracks and road maps, payroll is complex and will always require knowledgeable professionals who understand earnings programs, multi-state and local taxes, your companies benefit programs, compliance rules associated with Overtime, FLSA, FMLA, etc… not to mention Year-End… and no one wants to think about the penalties associated with incorrect payroll and tax filing.

Lastly, use this week to educate your employees.  Many younger generation new hires would probably appreciate a class in the basics of payroll processing and a review of their paycheck to understand how their pay went from gross to net. Extend the learning to HR and Benefits and how to better use Self Service features of your HCM. Most importantly have fun with it and celebrate your companies Payroll Professionals!
